Reading the Wind

You don't need expensive, fancy electronics on your sailboat to read the wind and optimize your sails and course for best speed. Even with basic telltales and observations of the water and other signs in the environment, you can learn what the wind is doing and is about to do - and act proactively rather than just responding when things change. If you're not sure how, here's an overview of basic techniques. Or you can use a much less expensive handheld wind meter like this one for accurate readouts.
