Advantages of Feathering Props
-
Less drag than a fixed prop.
-
Strong reverse power because the blades rotate in reverse direction, so that the leading edge of the blades is still leading rather than reversed into the trailing position as with a fixed prop.
-
Minimal vibration when blades are geared to feather in synchrony.
-
Some models allow for adjustable pitch settings for forward and reverse, giving more power depending on the engine’s transmission.
Disadvantages of Feathering Props
-
Blades protrude out from shaft (as in fixed prop) and may catch a rope underwater or foul on underwater objects.
-
Moving parts may jam on debris in the water or wear unevenly, not allowing blades to full open or feather, thereby causing vibration and loss of power.
-
Typically the most expensive prop type.
