If the wind is blowing hard, or if the boat is very large, use the forward spring line to control the boat’s stern or to avoid a boat immediately ahead. Back down on the spring line to swing the bow out from the dock, as shown here. Keep the boat's stern fendered against the dock until the bow swings out, levered against the spring line. As the boat makes way forward at an angle off the dock, release the spring and bring all lines aboard.
