Virgin Islands Race Week

By Thornton Reese, About.com

Overview: Virgin Islands Race Week is a classic two-race series in the Caribbean. Held over 10 days, Race Week is an ideal thaw-out for snowbound mainland sailors. The 10-day Race Week starts with the Rolex Regatta in St. Thomas and finishes with the British Virgin Islands Spring Regatta & Sailing Festival, hosted out of Tortola and Virgin Gorda. Race Week also offers a variety of family activities for the non-racers. The Virgin Islands Race Week winner is calculated based on combined scores from both events.
Thumbs Up: Beautiful venue, consistent tradewinds, top-notch race management. Family activities for non-racers are offered making this an ideal "multi-interest family" vacation. Fabulous post-race parties and music.
Thumbs Down: Charter boats are expensive and often ill-equipped for racing at this level. Plan on poor performance or putting a lot of work in to bring the boat up to snuff.
The Bottom Line: Ten days in the Caribbean racing on a sailboat. Enough said.
