How to Tie a Stop Knot

Tie a stop knot in the end of running rigging on a sailboat to prevent the knot from pulling through a block, cleat, or other gear. The figure-eight stop knot shown in these steps generally works best and is easy to untie when needed.

Begin by whipping the line end to prevent fraying.

Step 1

Start by making a loop near the end of the line with a twist as shown in the photo.
