Fold, Fold, Fold Your Boat

Thursday September 6, 2007

So what does a 37-year-old German artist do for breakfast? Cut up an empty milk carton and use the folded results as a model for a giant origami sailboat.

After making the scaled model from the carton, artist Frank Boelter took an 1,800 square-foot piece of paper and folded it into a 30-foot boat. Talk about cost effective. The boat cost $217 in materials and took two hours to complete. On the downside (so to speak), the artist / boat-builder thinks the boat will last forty days before sinking in a soggy mess.

Read more about it here.

While your sailing guide does not claim to have a how-to on folding your own boat, nor any clue on where to procure an 1,800 square foot piece of paper, he can point you to information on more traditional nautical uses of paper like cruising guides, charts and books. There is also this recent review of Reed's Almanac.
